Increased Stroke Risk Tied to More Time Spent Sitting in People Below 60

Spending more leisure time seated along with engaging in low physical activity has been found to be linked to a heightened risk of stroke in adults 40 to 60 years of age in a new analysis.

The study included self-reported data from over 140,000 people. The risk of stroke was shown to escalate by more than four times among sedentary people below the age of 60. However, there appeared to be no significant increase in risk among older individuals, reported researchers in the journal Stroke. Following a median follow-up of 9.4 years, 2,965 stroke events occurred, with a median time from survey response of 5.6 years. The risk of stroke for individuals under 60 years of age who engaged in low physical activity and excess sedentary free time was increased 4.5-times, in comparison with people who engaged in low physical activity and were sedentary for less than 4 hours a day (fully adjusted hazard ratio, 4.50)… (Medscape)
