Children may get COVID-19 vaccination only by March next year

According to official sources, the government will probably start COVID-19 vaccination for children only by March next year, despite the fact that three-four vaccines may get approved for those below 18 years of age by December.

The COVID-19 vaccine by Zydus Cadila, named ZyCoV-D, is likely to get an emergency use authorization for the 12-18 years age group by August-end, while Covaxin, the only vaccine being evaluated for use in the age group of 2-18 years, is also expected to be authorized by September. An mRNA vaccine by Gennova Pharmaceuticals is also undergoing trials.

The government currently plans to inoculate the adults by the end of this year. Priority will initially be given to children with co-morbidities, estimated at about 30 lakh, followed by including others based on availability.
