Lyme Disease May Increase Risk for Mental Illness

According to a study published in the American Journal of Psychiatry, patients with Lyme disease appear to have a heightened risk for any mental disorder, for affective disorders, as well as for suicidal behavior.

The large population-based study revealed that the rate of depression was 42% higher among patients with Lyme disease compared to people who did not have a history of the disease. Additionally, patients with Lyme disease had a 75% higher rate of suicide, noted researchers. The fully adjusted model revealed that the rate of any mental disorder was 28% higher among patients with Lyme borreliosis compared to those without the disorder.

Lead study author Brian A. Fallon stated that most patients with Lyme disease improve when the disease is detected early. But when it is not identified early or when it is more serious, clinicians must be aware that there may be psychiatric sequelae… (Medscape)
