Some Headache Types May Impact Pregnancy Outcomes

An observational study published online in Cephalalgia suggests that pregnant women who experience migraine with aura and tension-type headache have a heightened risk for giving birth to small-for-gestational-age babies.

Investigators assessed headache status of 515 consecutive pregnant women evaluated during first trimester, followed through childbirth. Overall, 43.5% of the women had migraine without aura (n = 72), migraine with aura (n = 27), or tension-type headache (n = 125). Women with migraine with aura and tension-type headache had higher rates of small-for-gestational-age infants (25.9% and 10.4% of births, respectively), while it was 5.5% for women without headache. Women with tension-type headache had increased risk for small-for-gestational-age infants with an odds ratio [OR] of 4.19, as did women having migraine with aura (OR 5.37)… (Medscape)
