Risk of heart inflammation increased slightly by vaccine, more by coronavirus infection, finds study

The use of Pfizer/BioNTech COVID-19 vaccine leads to a slight increase in the risk of heart inflammation; however, the risk appears to be higher among people infected with the virus, reported a study published in the New England Journal of Medicine.

One to 5 individuals, among every 100,000 who receive the vaccine, are likely to develop myocarditis, who would not otherwise have developed it, stated researchers on the basis of data from Clalit Health Services, Israel. On the other hand, this rate is 11 per 100,000 among people who contract COVID-19, which is much higher. Investigators compared adverse event rates among 884,828 vaccinated people and an equal number of unvaccinated individuals. Twenty one people developed myocarditis in the vaccinated group, which mostly included young men, compared to 6 in the unvaccinated group… (Reuters, August 26, 2021)
