Chennai: The Directorate of Medical Education (DME) has senta letter to the deans of some medical colleges directing them to collect the bond amount of Rs 50 lakh from 112 doctors who failed to take up posts in government hospitals.

These doctors completed their speciality courses in 2020 and 2021 but chose not to take up government service during the online transfer counselling. According to the norms, non-service doctors have to work in government hospitals for a period of two years. If they fail to do so, they are required to pay a bond amount agreed upon during admission.

The letter stated that these doctors did not accept their postings available in their speciality department in government medical colleges, adding that they were unwilling to work in the TN Medical Services. The DME asked the deans to issue a show cause notice first. The letter asked for action against the non-service post graduates for violating the bond condition and recovery of the bond amount under the Revenue Recovery Act.

The deans were also asked to share an action-taken report to the DME office latest by August 31. Speaking to Express, Dr R Narayana Babu, Director of Medical Education, mentioned that until last year, the bond amount was Rs 2 crore which has been reduced to Rs 50 lakh. He added that during the counselling on July 30, these doctors opted out despite the fact that vacancies were there.

The Madras High Court, on October 6, last year, ordered that postgraduate medical students, admitted under the All India Quota (AIQ), must serve the State government for two years.
