Children with Cancer More Likely to Develop Severe COVID-19 Illness

A global cohort study has shown that children and adolescents with cancer and COVID-19 infection appear to have a higher likelihood of developing severe and critical cases of COVID-19 in comparison with the general pediatric population.

The study published in Lancet Oncology noted that among children with cancer who had COVID-19, 20% went on to develop severe or critical disease compared to 1% to 6% of children without cancer, as seen in other studies. Children with cancer infected with COVID-19 also had a greater likelihood of being hospitalized and die when compared with the general pediatric population.
