Studies have shown that for newly infected COVID-19 patients, the risk for serious illness may be decreased with the use of a short course of fluvoxamine, a drug used to treat depression or obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD).

A new large, randomized phase 3 trial has also reported promising data. The study recruited COVID-19 patients from 11 sites in Brazil. A total of 1472 people received either a 10-day course of fluvoxamine or placebo. The antidepressant was found to reduce emergency department and hospital admissions by 29%. For the primary outcome, researchers evaluated if the conditions of patients deteriorated over a 28-day period in order to require either hospitalization or observation in the emergency department for more than 6 hours. In the placebo group, the condition of 108 of 733 patients worsened to this extent (14.7%). On the contrary, only 77 of 739 patients in the fluvoxamine group (10.4%) met these criteria, with a relative risk reduction of 29%.

The results, yet to be peer reviewed, are published in MedRxiv… (Medscape)
