Risk for COVID-19 hospitalization two-fold with Delta variant: UK study

A new study published in Lancet Infectious Diseases adds to the increasing evidence that the Delta variant of the coronavirus is not only highly transmissible, but more dangerous as well.

The study noted that COVID-19 patients infected with the Delta variant had a two-fold risk of hospitalization compared to patients infected with the Alpha variant. Researchers from Public Health England and the University of Cambridge stated that the findings also indicated that emergency care attendance along with hospital admission was also higher for patients infected with the Delta variant, thus suggesting an increased use of emergency care services and inpatient hospitalization.

The study included data from 8,682 patients in England infected with the Delta variant and 34,656 with the Alpha variant. In both the both groups, most of the patients (74%) were unvaccinated… (CNN, August 27, 2021)
