Salt Substitute Tied to Decrease in Stroke, CV Events, Mortality

The Salt Substitute and Stroke Study (SSaSS), conducted among 21,000 individuals with a history of stroke or high blood pressure in China, noted that switching from regular salt to a low-sodium salt substitute could have major public health benefits, such as a reduction in stroke, cardiovascular events, and death.

The study presented at the virtual European Society of Cardiology (ESC) Congress 2021, and simultaneously published in the New England Journal of Medicine, stated that after a period of 5 years, among people using the salt substitute, there was a 14% reduction in stroke, a 13% decline in major cardiovascular events, and a 12% decrease in death. Additionally, the benefits were obtained without any possible adverse effects… (Medscape)
