A new study has shown that slightly over 25% of healthcare workers were infected with COVID-19 despite getting fully vaccinated.

The study was done jointly by the Institute of Genomics and Integrative Biology (IGIB) and Max Hospitals in Delhi-NCR. Researchers noted that breakthrough infections were considerably more frequent during the Delta outbreak in Delhi compared to what was reported previously.

Shantanu Sengupta, a senior scientist at IGIB and one of the lead study researchers, stated that the severity of the infection was low, adding that vaccination is essential to avoid severe illness.

He further stated that among the 25% who were infected, a large proportion of them were asymptomatic. Therefore, wearing a mask is crucial to curb the spread of infection.

Sengupta mentioned that around 95 healthcare workers who had received two vaccine doses were evaluated from 45-90 days after inoculation. Out of these 95, over 25% developed breakthrough infections.

Most infections were unrecognized.
