25% healthcare staff infected with COVID-19 despite two vaccine doses in Delhi, finds study

A recent study has shown that slightly over 25% of healthcare workers were infected with COVID-19 despite getting fully vaccinated.

The study was jointly conducted by the Institute of Genomics and Integrative Biology (IGIB) and Max Hospitals in Delhi-NCR. Investigators noted that breakthrough infections were considerably more common during the Delta outbreak in Delhi as compared to reported previously. Shantanu Sengupta, senior scientist at IGIB and among the lead researchers of the study, stated that the severity of the infection was found to be low, adding that vaccination is essential to avoid severe illness. He also mentioned that among the 25% who were infected, a significant proportion of them were asymptomatic, therefore, wearing a mask is crucial to check the spread of infection… (ET Healthworld – PTI, September 1, 2021)
