Ahmedabad records 339% increase in chikungunya cases

Vector-borne diseases in Ahmedabad have registered a startling increase from January through August, in comparison with the same period last year. The city recorded a huge surge of 339% in chikungunya cases as dengue cases increased by 113% from January 1 to August 28.

AMC health department data suggest that there were 71 cases of chikungunya during this period last year, which increased to 312 during the same period this year. There were 205 dengue cases last year, which has surged to 438 this year during the same period.

AMC had registered 432 cases of dengue and 923 cases of chikungunya during the entire last year. The city has already surpassed last year’s total of dengue cases in the initial eight months only.

Data from the health department reported 33 cases of falciparum, 420 cases of malaria in January-August period this year. The corresponding figures were 17 and 310, respectively, in the same period last year.
