Pfizer COVID-19 vaccine could be authorized in U.S. for 5- to 11-year-olds in October: Sources

Top health officials in the United States expect that the Pfizer COVID-19 vaccine could receive authorization for children, 5-11 years of age, by the end of next month, stated sources.

It is expected that Pfizer will have sufficient data from clinical trials to apply for emergency use authorization (EUA) for this age group from the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) by the end of this month, revealed the sources. They expect that the agency could decide on whether the vaccine is safe and effective in these children within three weeks of submission for the EUA.

U.S. infectious disease expert, Dr. Anthony Fauci, said that if Pfizer applies for EUA by the end of this month, and if the data support its use, then by the initial weeks of October, the Pfizer vaccine will likely be ready. He added that it may take Moderna about three weeks more than Pfizer to obtain and analyze data on children in this age group… (Reuters, September 11, 2021)
