A new article published in Dermatology stated that oxidative stress and inflammation are among the proposed mechanisms involved in the pathogenesis of atopic dermatitis (AD). However, despite the benefits, current pharmacotherapeutic approaches impose adverse effects.

The authors reported on the promising outcomes of vitamin E when used as an adjunctive treatment for AD, due to its antioxidant and anti-inflammatory bioactivities. Furthermore, when used in recommended doses, vitamin E is well-tolerated and does not show any toxicity in humans. Contact allergies have been reported in rare cases.

The article observed that further research on distinct effects of different vitamin E isoforms and delivery systems in skin disorders should be considered.
