Pregnant woman denied treatment by three hospitals in Kerala, baby dies

KOLLAM: The family of a pregnant woman from Parippally, in Kollam district in Kerala alleged that the woman was denied treatment by three hospitals, two in Kollam and one in Thiruvananthapuram, after which her baby died in her womb. The district medical officer of Kollam has started an investigation into the matter.

Meera was eight months pregnant and was allegedly denied treatment by the Ramarao Memorial taluk hospital at Nedungolam in Paravur, Government Victoria Women’s Hospital in Kollam and SAT Hospital in Thiruvananthapuram, while she was having pregnancy-related complications.  A relative of the woman stated that she had sought treatment from the Paravur hospital around a week ago.

The relative said that she was referred to Victoria hospital from there. Victoria hospital’s doctors and nurses asked her to go to SAT Hospital as her condition was serious. When she reached the SAT hospital a few of days later, she was told to go back to the hospitals in Kollam.

She was admitted to the Kollam Government MCH on September 15 when she developed pain. The delivery was carried out and the baby was reported to have died five days ago. Kollam DMO, R Sreelatha, said that action will be taken if they find a lapse on the part of hospitals.
