R-value declines below 1 in mid-September in India

The Reproduction number or R-value, which signifies the spread of coronavirus pandemic, declined to 0.92 by middle of September after surpassing 1 by August-end.

The R-values of major cities, including Mumbai, Kolkata, Chennai, and Bengaluru, persist above 1. However, the R-values of Delhi and Pune is below 1. The R-values of Maharashtra and Kerala have also declined below 1.

By August-end, the R-value was 1.17 and came down to 1.11 between September 4 and 7. It has continued to be below 1 since then.

Sitabhra Sinha of the Institute of Mathematical Sciences, Chennai stated that this is good news that the country’s R-value has continued to be below 1, so is the R-value of Kerala and Maharashtra, the states with the highest number of active cases.

The R-value of Mumbai is 1.09, that of Chennai is 1.11, for Kolkata it is 1.04, and for Bengaluru the R-value is 1.06.

The R-value value was 0.86 between September 11 and 15 and 0.92 between September 14 and 19.
