A 34-year-old man from Ghaziabad underwent a successful surgery wherein doctors removed his right kidney and a part of his left lung which were severely infected with mucormycosis post-COVID-19 infection.

The surgery was performed at Sir Ganga Ram Hospital, and the multidisciplinary team of doctors that performed the surgery claimed that this case of mucormycosis involving a kidney, lung, and sinus was the first such case in the world occurring after COVID-19 infection.

The patient was brought to the hospital with post-COVID complications, including breathing difficulties, blood in sputum, and high-grade fever. Mucor was found to have affected his nasal cavity, the left lung and the right kidney.

A statement from the hospital mentioned that the part of the lung and the kidney had been severely damaged and an emergency removal of the infected areas was planned. The team of doctors involved in the surgery included Dr Sabyasachi Bal, a thoracic surgeon, Dr Manu Gupta, a senior urologist, and Dr Varun Rai, an ENT consultant.

Dr Gupta said that the case was a complicated one, adding that time was of the essence, because other organs could have been infected. Dr Gupta stated that the kidney had become non-functional. The fungus had almost spread to the liver and the large intestine. Dr Parakh stated that the patient is recovering well.
