Increase in New-Onset Tics Linked to COVID-19 Stress

A large, single-center study has noted an unusual increase in new-onset tics in patients with no previous history of these disorders. This has been linked to the psychological stress associated with COVID-19.

The study, presented at the virtual International Congress of Parkinson′s Disease and Movement Disorders (MDS) 2021, demonstrated several cases of tic-like movements and vocalizations with an abrupt onset in older adolescents and adults during the COVID-19 pandemic. None of these individuals had a prior diagnosis of a tic disorder.
