The World Health Organization (WHO) has issued revised air quality guidelines for six major pollutants, including particulate matters PM2.5 and PM10. The agency has made the guidelines more stringent compared to the earlier standards released in 2005.

More than seven million deaths annually across the globe are tied to exposure to these pollutants. These new standards would mean that 90% of the world’s population and around 100% of the individuals in south Asia live in areas exceeding the updated threshold. The revised annual standard for PM2.5 would be 50% less, i.e., 5 µg/m3 compared to 10 µg/m3 set in 2005. Its 24-hour mean would now be 15 µg/m3 compared to 25 µg/m3 in 2005. In India, the acceptable level for PM2.5 is 40 µg/m3 for annual and 60 µg/m3 for 24-hour mean. However, the country is working toward revising its air quality standards and the revised standards will be released in 2022… (ET Healthworld – TNN, September 23, 2021)
