Migraines Tied to Severity of Hot Flashes in Menopause

Women having a history of migraines may experience more severe menopausal hot flashes, suggests a cross-sectional study.

Stephanie Faubion of the Mayo Clinic in Jacksonville, Florida, and colleagues, stated that patients who had migraines had higher scores on the Menopause Rating Scale (MRS), pointing to worse overall menopausal symptoms. In a separate analysis that assessed only vasomotor symptoms, women with a history of migraine were found to have a 40% greater likelihood of experiencing severe hot flashes compared to no hot flashes (OR 1.40), stated Faubion at the virtual meeting of the North American Menopause Society.

The analysis included 3,308 women, nearly a quarter of them having a history of migraines. The participants were about 53 years of age on average. An association was noted between a history of migraines and the severity of vasomotor symptoms. In an analysis of women who had lower back pain, back pain was found to be linked with worse total overall menopause symptoms; however, it was not associated with hot flash severity… (Medpage Today)
