HYDERABAD: Several infants below the age of one year and overweight children aged over 10 years in Telangana are reported to have died due to dengue.

There has been one dengue death every day over the past two weeks at Niloufer Hospital, stated sources. According to a doctor at Niloufer Hospital, delay in starting treatment or hospitalization is resulting in fatal outcomes in some cases. Dengue deaths are daily being reported due to dengue myocarditis, dengue shock syndrome and encephalitis, bleeding tendencies, and severe dengue. The doctor stated that in several cases, patients are coming more than two days after fever onset which can be dangerous in case of severe dengue.

Hajeera Sultana (11), from Rajendra Nagar, developed sudden breathlessness and vomiting while being treated at a local clinic. She was shifted to Osmania General Hospital where she died on the same day. She had dengue. Mohammed Haleemuddin, the girl’s kin, said they were informed that they brought her late and her condition had deteriorated.

In some cases, delayed presentations like breathlessness, bleeding after the fever subsides and taking medication by oneself, are causing complications. Dr Parag Shankarrao Dekate, clinical director pediatrics and head of pediatric intensive care at Kims Cuddles, said that this time, dengue is causing trouble in children below one and overweight children aged above 10. Dr Parag said that among children below one, hyper-response to the disease causes liver, brain and kidney problems. In obese children above 10 years of age, hemoconcentration results in multi-organ failure.
