Record high COVID-19 cases in Melbourne despite two months of lockdown

COVID-19 cases in Melbourne increased to record levels on Thursday as officials blamed home gatherings to watch a sporting event for the surge in cases.

Authorities in Victoria estimated that around one-third of Thursday’s 1,438 new cases could be traced to home gatherings that took place last weekend to watch the Australian Rules Football Grand Final on television. State Premier Daniel Andrews said that several of these cases could be completely avoided. Officials stated that Thursday’s figures represent a 50% surge from Wednesday’s number of 950 cases, which is a major setback in managing the surge.

New South Wales recorded 941 new cases on Thursday, the majority being in Sydney, while Queensland registered 6 cases and the Australian Capital Territory recorded 31 cases… (Reuters, September 30, 2021)
