As many as 450 resident doctors at B J Medical College and Sassoon General Hospital are likely to join the stir planned by the Maharashtra Association of Resident Doctors (MARD) from October 1 considering their demands that are still pending.

An official statement issued by the association said that routine/non-emergency medical services will be closed from 8 am across the state, until their demands are accepted by the state government. Their demands include tuition fee waiver for the months that the doctors performed COVID duty instead of being taught the specializations they had enrolled for.

MARD office bearers said that the resident doctors have given their all in fighting the pandemic. Many of them have been infected and some have even lost their family members. They stated that the academic loss they have suffered must be compensated, adding that the academic fee for 2020-21 should be waived off. They also demanded an improvement in the condition of hostels at the state’s government medical colleges.

The students pay an annual fee of Rs 1 lakh and the state has around 4,000 resident doctors.
