Bisphosphonate use and future diabetes risk

A study presented during the virtual European Association for the Study of Diabetes meeting has shown that treatment with a common osteoporosis drug might help prevent diabetes.

A nationwide case-control study in Denmark noted that adults treated with alendronate at any time during their lifetime had a 36% lower likelihood for developing type 2 diabetes in comparison with those who had never been treated with the drug (adjusted OR 0.64, 95% CI 0.62-0.66). The study further revealed that the longer an individuals was on alendronate therapy seemed to heighten the protection further. Researchers noted a significant dose-response relationship between longer use of the drug and a reduced diabetes risk. Individuals treated with the drug for over 8 years, the longest duration of use included in the study, had a 53% reduced likelihood of developing diabetes (OR 0.47, 95% CI 0.40-0.56)… (Medpage Today)
