Hepatic cirrhosis (HC) is usually measured as the end stage of most chronic liver diseases, which can remain compensated for many years. HC is one of the utmost recurrent reason of death in the world, especially cases which gets complicated by ascites.

It has been stated that around 50% of patients with compensated cirrhosis develop ascites over a period of 10 years. The occurrence of ascites often occurs in the natural pathway of cirrhosis, and requires hospitalization and in certain cases, liver transplantation.

In this nonrandomized, uncontrolled observational clinical study, 56 patients fulfilling standardized diagnostic criteria for HCcA were examined during their treatment at an Ayurvedic institution. A standardized treatment protocol was developed that included oral administration of single and compound herbal preparations combined with purificatory measures along with dietary and lifestyle regimens. The outcomes were analyzed by measuring liver functions through specific clinical features and laboratory parameters with the help of Child-Pugh prognostic grade score.

The results declared that the outcomes demonstrated statistically remarkable and clinically relevant improvements after 6 weeks of treatment and a follow-up period of 18 weeks. However, further larger trials are required to assess on effectiveness, safety, and quality of the Ayurvedic approach in the treatment of HCcA are warranted to support these preliminary findings.
