Myocardial injuries are frequently reported following noncardiac surgery and have prognostic implications even with clinically silent elevations in troponin levels.

Therefore, in order to enhance the understanding, the American Heart Association (AHA) has issued its first scientific statement on the diagnostic criteria for myocardial injury after noncardiac surgery (MINS). The scientific statement provides the current best practices regarding surveillance, prevention, and management of this diagnosis, which was first introduced in the year 2014.

Diagnostic criteria include at least one raised postoperative troponin T level above the 99th percentile upper reference limit (URL) for the assay determined to be the result of an ischemic mechanism, with or without ischemic symptoms or electrocardiographic abnormalities.

The statement has been published online in the journal Circulation… (Medscape)
