In patients with hypertension and left ventricular hypertrophy (LVH), lower blood pressure levels could help decrease the risk for cardiovascular disease (CVD) events, suggests a new study published online in the Journal of the American College of Cardiology.

A nationwide cohort study conducted in adults in Korea with LVH followed the participants for over 11 years. For the study, 95,545 individuals, 40 to 79 years of age, were identified, who were being treated with antihypertensive medication and had evidence of LVH on baseline electrocardiography. Over a median follow-up of 11.5 years, there were 12,035 new CVD events.

Patients with a systolic blood pressure (SBP) of >140 mmHg and diastolic blood pressure (DBP) of >90 mmHg while undergoing treatment for hypertension were found to have a 30% increased risk of having a cardiovascular event compared to patients with SBP <130 mmHg and DBP <80 mmHg… (Medscape)
