An increased severity of psoriasis also heightens the risk of developing psoriatic arthritis (PsA). Factors that predict the development of PsA in psoriasis patients are – nail, inverse and scalp psoriasis; a family history of PsA, and an increased severity of psoriasis.PsA imposesmagnanimous public health burden owing to the associated comorbidities, such as – cardiovascular disease, metabolic syndrome, Crohn’s disease, obesity, diabetes, uveitis, anxiety and depression. Therefore, early and precise diagnosis of PsA is necessary for ensuring appropriate management, improved outcomes and prevention of complications.

Other contributing factors to PsA are – obesity, female gender, age group 25-65 years and rheumatic disease and risk factors. It has been found that the mean time of onset of PsA among patients with psoriasis is 10 years after the commencement of psoriasis symptoms. About 20-30% of patients with psoriasis are alsodiagnosed with PsA.

It was suggested that patients with psoriasis, particularly those with more severe skin symptoms and/or other PsA risk factors, should be routinely screened.
