A real-world study, presented at CHEST 2021, the American College of Chest Physicians annual meeting, noted that prophylactic treatment with azithromycin eliminated exacerbations in nearly one-third of adult patients with asthma.
Hanan Ajay reported that among the 34 patients included in the observational study, only one did not have a decrease in infections by at least 50% in comparison with the historical average of 6.44 infections a year. The annual average for patients on azithromycin was 1.47 infections a year. Overall, 12 of the patients in the study had zero infections while on azithromycin treatment.
