U.S. FDA authorizes Moderna, J&J COVID-19 booster shots

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration has given authorization for the booster doses of COVID-19 vaccines from Moderna and Johnson & Johnson. The agency stated that Americans are allowed to select a different vaccine from their original vaccination as the booster shot.

All the three vaccines which are authorized in the United States can now be given as booster doses to certain groups. Acting FDA Commissioner Janet Woodcock said that the availability of these boosters is critical for sustained protection against coronavirus. The Moderna booster shot is half the strength of the doses administered in the initial series of immunization.

FDA officials have also suggested that they were looking into reducing the recommended age for booster shots of the Pfizer/BioNTech COVID vaccine to 40 years, based on data available from Israel… (Reuters, October 21, 2021)
