Life expectancy in India drops by 2 years during pandemic

Life expectancy in India has declined by around 2 years due to the ongoing pandemic, suggests a statistical analysis by International Institute for Population Studies (IIPS), Deonar.

Assistant professor Surayakant Yadav, IIPS, said that life expectancy at birth for men has dropped from 69.5 years in 2019 to 67.5 years in 2020. Likewise, life expectancy at birth for women has come down from 72 years to 69.8 years. The study also evaluated length of life inequality, i.e., variation in length of life within populations, and noted that COVID toll was highest among men aged between 35 and 69 years.
