Uttar Pradesh reported its first Zika virus case on Sunday. A statement by state officials said that the case was identified in Kanpur district where an Indian Air Force (IAF) official was diagnosed with the infection.
The IAF official was suffering from fever for the past few days and was admitted to the Air Force Hospital. His blood samples, sent to Pune for examination, came out positive for Zika virus.
Chief Medical Officer, Nepal Singh, stated that 22 more samples of the patient′s contacts have been sent for examination. An alert has been issued and several teams have been directed to curb the spread of the virus in the district.
In July, Kerala had reported a case of Zika virus in a 24-year-old pregnant woman. In August, Maharashtra also reported a case after a Pune woman tested positive. Doctors claim that mild Zika virus cases have been present in the country since April this year but were not getting detected because of the deadly second wave of the COVID pandemic.
Dr Rajalakshmi, senior consultant at KIMSHEALTH hospital, said that they had been seeing patients with rashes and fever since April, adding that it peaked around May. Dr Rajalakshmi said that because COVID-19 was also at its peak around that time, they were conducting teleconsultations and the patients did not come to the OPD.
