Chronic GI Disorders Seen Months after COVID-19

Four in 10 COVID-19 patients belonging to the disadvantaged communities had new post-COVID gastrointestinal disorders, like functional dyspepsia (FD) and irritable bowel syndrome (IBS), revealed a retrospective study.

Researchers at the Massachusetts General Hospital, Boston, conducted a survey of 200 individuals and noted that about 39.5% of the individuals developed de novo post-COVID gastrointestinal disorders. Fifty eight individuals reported having FD-like complaints, two had IBS-like complaints, and 19 had both. Following adjustment, anxiety and depression (OR 3.27) and female sex (OR 2.38) appeared to have an independent association with incident FD or IBS-like gastrointestinal disorders after COVID, noted researchers in Clinical Gastroenterology and Hepatology… (Medpage Today)
