AY4.2 variant infrequent in India, says INSACOG

A new mutation of the coronavirus variant, called AY4.2, which has been associated with an increase in cases in the United Kingdom, is very infrequent in India, stated a weekly report by the India SARS-CoV-2 Genome Consortium (INSACOG).

The mutation accounts for a slowly rising proportion of cases in the U.K., reported Public Health England (PHE) on October 22. It has also been reported in several other countries and is seen in travelers to the U.K. from many countries. 

This lineage has the mutations of Delta variant and AY.4, a sub-lineage. The variants seems to be as potent as Delta.

INSACOG said in its latest bulletin that the recent surge in AY4.2 in genomic surveillance must be interpreted with caution… (The Hindu, October 27, 2021)
