16,000 new COVID-19 cases in India as infections rise in some states

Cases continue to rise in some states that witnessed slight surge in infections after the Durga Puja week. After registering around 800 cases for two consecutive days, West Bengal again saw over 900 cases. The rising trend was also seen in Odisha and Himachal Pradesh.

With the figures from Jharkhand yet to come, the overall case count for the country was 16,325 with 203 deaths on Wednesday. This number is the highest in the past four days which could likely be due to the combined effect of the rise in the weekdays and the slight increase reported from West Bengal, Odisha and Himachal Pradesh. West Bengal reported 976 cases on Wednesday, which is more than double the cases logged on October 15 (451). For the past eight days, the state has been logging more than 800 daily cases. Odisha recorded over 500 cases on Wednesday, after five consecutive days of remaining below that figure. Himachal Pradesh registered 261 cases on the day, which is the highest figure for the state since September 21.
