People who have received two vaccine doses can still spread coronavirus in the household

According to a new study, published in The Lancet Infectious Diseases, people who have received two doses of a COVID-19 vaccine are contracting the infection and spreading it to those they live with.

Individuals who have been administered two vaccine doses can be as infectious as those who have not been vaccinated. And even if they have no or few symptoms, the likelihood of transmitting the infection to other unvaccinated people in the household is about two in five (38%). This comes down to one in four (25%) if the housemates are fully vaccinated.

The study was conducted from September 2020 to September 2021 and included 440 households in London and Bolton. People who had received two vaccine doses had a lower, but still considerable, risk of contracting infection with the Delta variant, in comparison with unvaccinated individuals. They seemed to be just as infectious. Although vaccinated individuals cleared the infection more quickly, their peak viral load was found to be similar to that of unvaccinated people… (BBC, October 28, 2021)
