Chikungunya cases reach 33 in Mumbai

Mumbai: Chikungunya and dengue cases continue to rise in the city, according to recent civic data released on Monday. Confirmed cases of chikungunya fever increased to 33 in October, from seven in September, in Mumbai.

Overall, the city has recorded 48 confirmed cases of the viral disease this year. However, doctors are of the opinion that the real burden could be much more. In the previous two years, Mumbai had not registered a single confirmed case of chikungunya. Civic officials said that the private sector has been advised to report all the cases.

Additionally, there were 247 confirmed dengue hospitalizations in October in the city. In September, there were 257 hospitalizations. While there was a record decline last year to 129 cases and three deaths, this year the figure till October has reached 730. There have been three fatalities thus far.

Hepatitis cases have also increased in October. In comparison with 28 cases in September, 41 cases were reported in October. Leptospirosis cases have seen a decline, from 46 in September to 32 in October. Overall, 211 cases have been recorded in the city this year. There have been four deaths due to leptospirosis.
