Vitamin D and Omega-3 Supplements May Reduce Risk of Autoimmune Diseases

A randomized trial of around 26,000 adults conducted to evaluate the effects of vitamin D and omega-3 fatty acid supplementation on incident cancer and cardiovascular disease has shown that 5 years of vitamin D supplementation was tied to a 22% reduction in the risk for confirmed autoimmune diseases, and omega-3 fatty acid supplementation for 5 years was linked with an 18% decline in confirmed and probable incident autoimmune diseases.

These are nontoxic and well-tolerated supplements and there are no other well-established effective therapies for reducing the incidence of autoimmune diseases, said Karen H. Costenbader, of Brigham & Women′s Hospital in Boston, Massachusetts. Therefore, the significance of these results is very high, she said.
