AY.4.2 variant not of concern, says INSACOG

The Indian SARS-CoV-2 Genomics Consortium (INSACOG) has stated that the frequency of AY.4.2 variant of coronavirus is less than 0.1 % of all variants of concern and variants of interest (VOC/VOI) and it is too low to be of concern at present.

In its weekly bulletin, the INSACOG said that the vaccine effectiveness does not appear to vary for AY.4.2 in comparison with other Delta variants. It added that Delta (B.1.617.2 and AY.x) continues to be the leading variant of concern (VOC) in the country and there is no new variant of interest or variant of concern in India. It further stated that there is no biological basis for heightened transmissibility of AY.4.2 variant, as determined epidemiologically… (The Hindu – PTI, November 7, 2021)
