Some U.S. states expand booster availability beyond federal recommendations

Affected by surge in cases and hospitalizations, officials in Colorado and California have asked healthcare providers to make COVID-19 vaccine booster shots available to all adults, superseding the guidance from the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).

Dr. Jesse Goodman, an infectious disease expert at Georgetown University, Washington, and former chief scientist at the Food and Drug Administration (FDA), called it “remarkable." The California health department directed healthcare providers to allow people to determine themselves if they had a high risk in a letter dated November 9, and told them not to turn away adults asking for boosters.
