The clinical approach towards patients in the dermatology department has transformed over the recent past owing to the newer developments. Substantial progress has been documented in adjunct imaging technologies that aid in clinical diagnoses and management. Additionally, technological advances in devices and therapeutic modalities have also occurred.

A new study published in the Journal of Cosmetic Dermatology explored recent technologies in dermatology, as well as their uses, shortcomings and future prospects.

Here, a comprehensive literature search was conducted through accessing electronic internet databases "PubMed" and "Google Scholar".

Novel technologies like confocal microscopy, digital photographic imaging, optical coherence tomography, high-frequency ultrasonography and artificial intelligence were discussed in depth. The review elaborately assessed the strengths and drawbacks of each technology employed in the field of dermatology. The article also informed that artificial intelligence/machine-based learning software has potential to make a significant impact on dermatological practice.

It was inferred that newer technologies can help in augmenting clinical acumen, choosing more conservative approaches, differentiating benign and malignant lesions and better monitoring of the treatment outcome.
