A new sub-lineage of the Delta variant of coronavirus has been detected in Sri Lanka, as per medical experts. 

Chandima Jeewandara, director of the Department of Immunology and Molecular Medicine, stated that a new sub-lineage, called B.1.617.2.104, has been found in Sri Lanka, and is spreading in some provinces. Jeewandara mentioned that the Delta variants in Sri Lanka now have two unique sub-lineages that originated in the country. These include AY.28 and AY.104.

He added that three SARS-CoV-2 variants originated in Sri Lanka, with the first one being B.411. He reported that the new variant is spreading in the North, North Central and Southern provinces.
