New sub-lineage of Delta variant found in Sri Lanka

A new sub-lineage of the Delta variant of coronavirus has been detected in Sri Lanka, as per medical experts. 

Chandima Jeewandara, director of the Department of Immunology and Molecular Medicine, stated that a new sub-lineage, called B.1.617.2.104, has been found in Sri Lanka, and is spreading in some provinces. Jeewandara mentioned that the Delta variants in Sri Lanka now have two unique sub-lineages that originated in the country. These include AY.28 and AY.104.

He added that three SARS-CoV-2 variants originated in Sri Lanka, with the first one being B.411. He reported that the new variant is spreading in the North, North Central and Southern provinces. The samples will be sent to Hong Kong to determine the transmissibility of the variant… (Business Standard – IANS, November 20, 2021)
