A recent study by researchers from the Indian Institute of Science, Bengaluru, has identified potential blood-based biomarkers to detect disease progression and survival times in patients with advanced-stage brain tumors.

The research team assessed tumor and blood samples from patients with gliomas to detect surface proteins on immune cells in the blood. They found that their levels were closely related to tumor progression. However, the researchers have cautioned that large-scale trials are needed for testing and validation before this can be clinically used in diagnostics.

In the study published in the journal, Oncoimmunology, researchers have demonstrated that advanced gliomas- grade 3 and 4 are linked to a poor prognosis and low chances of survival of the patient. (ET HEalthworld-TNN, November 22, 2021, 12:51 IST)
