Study finds Covaxin protects against multiple coronavirus variants

A new study has noted that besides targeting mutations in spike proteins, Covaxin also targets multiple other proteins and protects against Alpha, Beta, Gamma, Kappa and Delta variants. 

The protection offered by the vaccine is long-term as it is generated through memory cells (T cell, B cell), and is not affected by a decrease in antibodies. The study was led by the National Institute of Immunology (NII), Delhi.

The researchers studied in a cohort for a period of 6 months and noted that Covaxin evoked good memory response. They found best protection against Alpha variant, followed by the Delta variant, while the least protection was noted against the Beta variant.
