Experimental Chewing Gum May Reduce Spread of Coronavirus

A study published in the journal Molecular Therapy has stated that an experimental chewing gum could decrease the amount of coronavirus particles in saliva, thereby helping slow down the transmission.

The chewing gum contains a protein which traps virus particles and could potentially decrease the spread of droplets carrying the virus when infected people talk, breathe, or cough. Tested by researchers at the University of Pennsylvania in test tubes with the help of saliva and swab samples from hospitalized COVID-19 patients, the chewing gum carries copies of the ACE2 protein on cell surfaces. It was noted during the experiments that the virus particles attached to the ACE2 receptors in the chewing gum.
