Severe COVID-19 Increases Risk of Dying in Following Year Two-fold

A study published in the journal Frontiers in Medicine suggests that patients who survive severe COVID-19 have more than two-fold increased risk of death during the following year compared to those who have mild symptoms and those who were not infected.

The increased risk was higher among patients aged below 65 years. Only 20% of the deaths from severe COVID-19 were caused by the typical COVID complications, such as respiratory failure. Investigators assessed the electronic health records of over 13,000 patients tested for COVID-19 within the University of Florida health system. A total of 178 patients had severe symptoms and were hospitalized within the first 30 days of a positive test. An additional 246 patients had mild or moderate symptoms, while the rest tested negative. Patients with the most severe symptoms were found to have 2.5-fold higher likelihood of dying during the following year compared to those who tested negative, and a 1.9-fold higher risk compared to patients with mild symptoms.
