Retinopathy Risk Higher in Children with Type 2 Diabetes than Type 1

Children with type 2 diabetes (T2D) seem to have a significantly higher likelihood of developing retinopathy and other ocular complications with time in comparison with children diagnosed with type 1 diabetes (T1D), suggests new research published in JAMA Ophthalmology.

The study included a retrospective review of medical records from all residents of Olmsted County, Minnesota, between 1970 and 2019. The study cohort included 606 children with T1D or T2D diagnosis. Researchers noted in the population-based cohort of children (< 22 years) that the risk of diabetic retinopathy was 88% higher in those with T2D compared to those with T1D within the first 15 years of diagnosis.
