Lockdown during pandemic deteriorated emotional well-being for adults with hearing, vision loss

According to a study presented at the 181st Meeting of the Acoustical Society of America, lockdown imposed during the COVID-19 pandemic led to mental and emotional issues among adults with sensory impairment.

The investigators surveyed three groups of older adults from the Twin Cities community - those with vision loss, those with hearing loss, and those without either of the two conditions. They were asked about their worries, well-being, and social isolation at six-week intervals between April 2020 and July 2021. All the groups had lower scores on a patient health questionnaire after the pandemic started. People with vision or hearing loss experienced unique problems. Masks made conversations difficult for people with hearing loss. People with low vision were also greatly impacted as their mobility systems are built around public transportation and being around people…(ET Healthworld – ANI, December 8, 2021)
