According to a study presented at the 181st Meeting of the Acoustical Society of America, lockdown imposed during the COVID-19 pandemic led to mental and emotional issues among adults with sensory impairment.

The investigators surveyed three groups of older adults from the Twin Cities community - those with vision loss, those with hearing loss, and those without either of the two conditions. They were asked about their worries, well-being, and social isolation at six-week intervals between April 2020 and July 2021. All the groups had lower scores on a patient health questionnaire after the pandemic started. People with vision or hearing loss experienced unique problems. Masks made conversations difficult for people with hearing loss.
