A study published in JAMA Psychiatry suggests that babies born through fertility procedures do not have an increased risk of developing major psychiatric disorders in adolescence and adulthood.

Investigators assessed over 31,000 individuals conceived through assisted reproduction techniques (ART) in Sweden from 1994 through 2006. At the time of final follow-up (December 2018), the study participants were aged 12 to 25 years. A team of investigators, from Sweden and the United States, noted that among these individuals, rates of depression and suicidal behavior were not increased in comparison with the general population.

It was noted that adolescents conceived through ART did not have an increased risk of developing depression or suicidal behaviors when compared with other teens. Additionally, the type of ART procedure was also not linked to worse mental health outcomes. Fresh embryo transfer appeared to be associated with a lower risk of mood disorders when the results were compared with children born to parents with infertility who did not undergo ART procedures (adjusted hazard ratio [aHR], 0.90)… (Medscape)
